Emma Terweduwe — Art, Design & Textiles interwoven at RUIMTE

A First Encounter in the Atelier

The moment I stepped into Emma Terweduwe’s atelier, I felt something shift. The textures, the colors, the energy of her work filled the room. As Emma spoke about her process, my admiration only grew. She is more than one thing: an artist, a designer, a creator who moves effortlessly from artworks to unique furniture pieces to home textiles like plaids and pillows.

I first discovered Emma’s work through my collaboration with Soixante, for whom she designed pillows that brought depth and warmth to the interior. Meeting her in person only confirmed what I already sensed: her work is not only about aesthetics, but about resonance, touch, and meaning.

A Background in Textile Design

After graduating in Textile Design from Ghent’s KASK Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Emma worked with renowned names such as Henrik Vibskov, Bless, and the Tilburg Textile Museum. By the end of 2020, she had established her own studio, marking the beginning of a unique journey into contemporary textile design.

Her creations combine natural and durable materials, graphic color patterns, and a signature technique: felting woven fabrics. This process results in expressive and luxurious works that invite touch — a reminder of the importance of tactility in our increasingly digital and superficial world.

A Slow and Tactile Philosophy

Emma’s work is deliberately slow and considered. She begins from scratch: selecting threads, creating her own color combinations, and letting the process flow naturally without rigid sketches. Her textiles critique the pace of modern life by valuing substance over appearance.

For Emma, collaboration with other artisans is essential — not only to ensure quality but also to preserve local crafts and traditions. She masterfully blends analogue craftsmanship with digital tools, always preserving the unique essence of handmade objects.

From Artworks to Home Textiles

At RUIMTE, I am proud to curate a selection of Emma’s artworks and home textiles — woven plaids, pillows, and tactile pieces that bring atmosphere and character to interiors. These works are not just decorative items, but living objects that resonate with both the hand and the eye.

Emma’s creations remind me that design is not about adding more, but about choosing better. Each piece is an invitation to slow down, to touch, and to connect with the present moment through craftsmanship.

A Collaboration That Resonates

Working with Emma is about finding resonance between RUIMTE’s vision and her multidimensional practice. She embodies the philosophy we stand for: design that blurs the boundaries between art, craft, and interior living.
